Glen Ellyn police officers buy distraught local boy a new tablet

A few Glen Ellyn police officers recently went the extra mile to put a smile on the face of a local boy.

Assistant Chief Bill Holmer said officers responding to a house call in late March found a young boy who lived at the home had his electronic tablet broken by a family member. Holmer said the boy's mother had just bought the tablet for her son.

"So the kid, of course, is distraught about the tablet," Holmer said.

But instead of moving on to the next case or call, one of the responding officers asked others on his shift to pitch in and buy the boy a new tablet.

The cops not only bought the boy a new tablet, but they also bought a toy for his younger sibling, Holmer said.

"I'm impressed with their care and concern and willingness to give back to the community," Holmer said.

The boy's mother also was touched by the officers' kindness.

"I was very excited," she said.

Although Holmer shared the story, he said the officers didn't want any attention for their good deed.

"They didn't want it publicized, they didn't want their names out. (That's) not why they did it," Holmer said. "It was purely to make the kid feel better, which I commend them for. I'm proud to work with such great people."
