Algonquin library celebrates week with special programs

With the theme "Unlimited Possibilities at Your Library," the Algonquin Area Public Library will celebrate National Library Week, April 12-18, with a variety of programs, events, and community outreach efforts.

They will celebrate National Library Week with programs and events for children, families and adults. Highlights include a free family movie night, a presentation about heirloom gardening, a super Saturday spring celebration, and a month-long comic/graphic novel trivia competition on facebook.com/aapld, which builds up to the library's Free Comic Book Day and Mini Comic Con on May 2.

It's a great week to stop in and learn more about the library, such as the no-fine policy for overdue books, how to get a library card and free programs like the one-on-one technology tutorials.

On April 14-15, staff will donate $5 a day get the privilege of wearing jeans to work. All funds will be donated to the Senior Care Volunteer Network of McHenry County, which works with community seniors who live at home to help them maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life. The Harnish main library will host an information table for the Senior Care Volunteer Network throughout April. Stop by and learn more about this organization that provides free services to local seniors and priceless volunteer opportunities.

Finally, the library invites residents, community leaders and local business owners to help build the new People's Library collection featuring your stories. Library staff is collecting books about individuals, family members, neighborhoods, special events, school histories or anything else important to you. Stop by the adult services desk and pick up a free re-purposed 10-page book. Then tell your story using photos, drawings, scrapbook techniques, poems, journal entries, narrative: anything goes. Authors must be age 14 and older. Parents can make it a family project with help from the kids. Complete your book and return it to either library location for cataloging by 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, and you will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card.
