Incumbent Lalmalani clinches in Oak Brook mayoral election

Oak Brook Village President Gopal Lalmalani received a strong mandate from voters in a three-way race Tuesday.

Unofficial results showed Lalmalani with 1,390 votes followed by attorney Natalie Cappetta with 702 and sitting Trustee Mark Moy with 288, according to unofficial results.

"The residents saw the record I've had in leadership has been a strong one," Lalmalani said.

Voters also picked three village board trustees from among six candidates.

The top vote-getter was newcomer Tiesenga with 1,668. Trustees Asif Yusuf and Michael Manzo were re-elected with 1,461 votes and 1,175, respectively.

Trustee challengers Michael Wencel received 769 votes, Charles Thompson got 795 and Elisa Templeton garnered 396, with all 17 precincts reporting.

Lalmalani, 65, is a cardiologist who was elected village president in 2011 after serving five years on the plan commission.

Negative campaigning that the village was in financial distress was inaccurate, Lalmalani said. "The village has been very active with commercial expansion ... our revenues went up more than expenditures."

Voters knew "the difference between what we accomplished and what we were able to do and what our plan is for the next four years and they weren't taken in by the smear campaign the opposition put out."

Moy, 65, is a physician who has been a village trustee since 2009. Moy will keep his seat.

Lalmalani praised Moy for running a "decent and good campaign. We were more allies than competitors," Lalmalani said.

Cappetta, 49, serves on the village's zoning board of appeals and is a member of the planned unit development commission.

Yusif is involved in real estate and farming. Manzo owns MAM Insurance & Financial Services. Tiesenga is an attorney.
