Glenbard West relay continues its fine form

Even with its star anchor leg on vacation, the Glenbard West's boys 3,200-meter track and field relay quartet is pretty potent.

Less than a week after breaking the indoor West Suburban Silver record in the event, Jake Jaskowiak, Eric Newmann, Nate Crail and Chris Buechner returned to competitive action for the first time at the Bulldog Relays in Batavia on Thursday afternoon.

The quartet - with senior stalwart Ben Hecht out of town - won the fast heat of the race in a time of 8 minutes, 5.91 seconds.

"It's a fun way to close out the indoor season," Buechner said of the unscored meet which featured the three longest relays, an open 1,600-meter run and the 55 high hurdles.

"We pulled in some other guys (Crail)," Buechner said. "It's good to get them some experience. They'll be back for next year."

The Hilltoppers were runner-up to host Batavia in the 1,600 relay in 3:35.07.

The Glenbard South and Glenbard East girls were also in the coed field.

Coming off a fifth consecutive Metro Suburban Conference indoor championship last Friday, Glenbard South had its most promising relay - the 800 - disqualified on an exchange infraction.

Senior Angela Kerndl led Glenbard East with her third-place finish in the 55 hurdles.
