Residents escape Algonquin house fire without injury

Two people inside an Algonquin house escaped safely when a large upstairs bathroom caught fire in the 1400 block of Braewood Drive, authorities said.

The house has been deemed uninhabitable, but firefighters said working smoke alarms helped a husband and wife escape without injury.

The fire broke out about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at a two-story house, and the first fire crews on the scene saw fire and smoke coming from the second floor.

Firefighters from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived at 2:35 a.m. and had the fire extinguished by 2:52 a.m. They stayed until 5 a.m. ventilating the home, making sure the fire had not extended elsewhere and beginning their investigation.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Assistant Fire Chief Peter VanDorpe said it appears to be accidental, not suspicious. A damage estimate was not available Thursday.

Firefighters from Barrington, Carpentersville, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove and Huntley assisted with the response.
