Wheeling man faces gun charges
While investigating shootings Saturday in Prospect Heights, police arrested a Wheeling man on gun charges.
Daniel Uriostegui, 23, was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. He appeared in bond court Thursday, where Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo ordered him held without bail for violating his 2014 probation for marijuana possession.
Uriostegui also has a misdemeanor DUI pending, prosecutors said.
About 11 p.m. Saturday, police received multiple reports of gunshots in the 700 block of Piper Lane, authorities said in a news release. Officers encountered two victims: a 38-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head and a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest, police said. Both men were taken to Lutheran General Hospital.
Neither the victims nor the witnesses cooperated with the investigation, according to police, who attributed their reluctance to gang allegiance.
Interviews with neighbors and video footage from a recently installed security camera led police to Uriostegui's apartment, where they recovered a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle and a .38 caliber handgun. The firearms were sent to the Northern Illinois Crime Laboratory for comparison with evidence police found at the scene, police said.
Uriostegui next appears in court on April 14.
