Kane prosecutors primed to monitor April election

In just three weeks, dozens of school, park and library board seats, along with village trustee and president and city council posts, will be decided by local voters.

And the Kane County State's Attorney's office is ready to work to ensure a fair and orderly April 7 election.

The office will operate an election complaint hotline at (630) 208-5328 and have assistant state's attorneys fan out across the county to visit polling places on Election Day.

Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said his office did not receive any complaints in the Feb. 24 primary election in Campton Hills, but will be ready to respond to any complaint of illegal electioneering, improperly placed signs or denial of voting rights on April 7.

The hotline is for election complaints only; for information about polling places, call (630) 232-5990 or visit kanecountyelections.org.

Early voting begins March 23.

Charges dropped in shooting

Kane County prosecutors recently dismissed charges against a 24-year-old man in connection with an April 2014 shooting in Aurora.

According to court records, the state dismissed felony charges of attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm against Antonio L. Knight, of the 2000 block of Fox Point Circle, Aurora.

"It was a case of mistaken identification," defense attorney Donald Zuelke said . "One state witness identified him in a photo lineup and said that was the guy. Upon further investigation, (prosecutors) realized they had the wrong person and did the right thing."

Zuelke said Knight was not involved in the shooting, and had no knowledge of anyone who may have been. He was released after spending more than three months on electronic home monitoring.

Law scholarships offered

The Kane County Bar Foundation is accepting applications through April 30 for $1,500 scholarships it is offering.

Applicants must be law students with at least one parent residing in Kane County.

The foundation also may take into consideration whether the applicant intends to practice law in Kane County, but that is not requirement.

In previous years, the foundation has offered at least two $1,500 scholarships.

Also, the Honorable Patrick Dixon Memorial Scholarship will be awarded. Applicants for this scholarship must demonstrate a financial need.
