Pence orders flags lowered to honor Notre Dame's Hesburgh

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mike Pence has ordered flags at state facilities across Indiana to be flown at half-staff in honor of the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh.

Hesburgh served as Notre Dame's president for 35 years before retiring in 1987. He advised world leaders on human rights issues and served on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.

The flags will be lowered at state offices from sunrise to sunset Wednesday to mark funeral services for Hesburgh. He died Thursday at age 97.

His funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday. A tribute Wednesday night will feature former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as speakers.

Pence has also asked businesses and residents to lower their flags in tribute to Hesburgh's life and service.
