Naperville might offer Craigslist buyers, sellers safe place to meet

Naperville soon may create a "Craigslist safe zone" similar to those popping up at police stations across the nation as law enforcement agencies offer space and a watchful eye to protect buyers and sellers using the online marketplace.

Such safe zones have been established by police departments in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Kansas, and now Naperville is considering one after a city council member brought the idea to police Chief Robert Marshall.

"It's a program I think we could easily implement," Marshall said. "I think it's a great idea to provide safety to our residents who would get involved with purchasing items on Craigslist."

Police officers already stationed at the front desk of the department's headquarters at 1350 Aurora Ave. could run the program to allow people to conduct Craigslist transactions safely in the lobby, Marshall said,

When people use Craigslist, an online marketplace offering advertisements for electronics, collectibles, jewelry and other items and services, the buyer and seller often must meet in person to complete the deal.

Council member Steve Chirico said he read recently about Craigslist safe zones being offered to prevent people from being robbed, mugged or otherwise harmed during a transaction, and he wanted to bring the service to Naperville.

Other council members also supported the idea and told Marshall they would like him to pursue it.
