Big snow means free furniture for some Art Van customers

WARREN, Mich. (AP) - Some furniture shoppers in parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio are expected to get big refunds because of cooperation from a big snowstorm.

Michigan-based Art Van Furniture ran a "Let It Snow" promotion at several Chicago-area stores as well as locations in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Toledo, Ohio.

Purchases were made on certain days in January. If it snowed more than 3 inches on Sunday the promotion meant free furniture, mattresses and TVs. The National Weather Service says totals topped that level. Art Van says that could affect $2.5 million in purchases.

In a statement over the weekend, company founder Art Van Elslander says: "Our goal was to usher in winter with fanfare, fun and lots of free furniture."

The chain plans to notify customers Tuesday.
