Elgin boy, 12, hit, killed by car

An Elgin boy died Wednesday night after being hit by a car near Route 20 and McLean Boulevard, officials said.

The 12-year-old was apparently on his way home when he was struck at about 6:15 p.m. by a vehicle traveling east on Route 20, Elgin police said. Officials believe he was running south across lanes of traffic west of McLean Boulevard, which was in violation of the law, police said.

The boy was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle wasn't injured and won't be ticketed.

Elgin police continue to investigate. Anyone with information should call the Elgin Police Department's traffic unit at (847) 289-2661.
