Roskam gets post to help lead IRS investigations

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, a Wheaton Republican, will have a new post in the next Congress that could have him presiding over hearings into ongoing Internal Revenue Service scandals.

Roskam was appointed chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee's Oversight Subcommittee, a panel that can investigate tax matters.

The subcommittee led the investigation into IRS targeting conservative groups for additional scrutiny and the probe into former IRS executive Lois Lerner, an investigation likely to continue into the next Congress that's sworn in next month.

"These last few years have shown us the real dangers of agencies run amok, and frankly it's become all too common for citizens to be in the cross-hairs of their own federal government," Roskam said in a statement. "But in this moment of both a Republican House and Senate, we have an incredible opportunity to shine a light into the dark corners, and restore the checks and balances that the founders intended."

Roskam was re-elected in November to a fifth term from the suburban 6th Congressional District. Formerly the House's No. 4 Republican, he lost a bid to move up to the whip job earlier this year.
