Will County sheriff race too close to call

The race for Will County sheriff is so tight that it could take days to declare a winner.

Just 242 votes separated the two candidates, with all precincts voting.

But the unofficial tally does not include early votes, as well as provisional and late absentee ballots that could take days to count.

Ken Kaupas, of Shorewood, had 92,979 votes to 92,737 for Mike Kelley, of Lockport.

The two veteran cops are competing to replace Paul Kaupas, Ken's second cousin, who is retiring after 12 years.

Kaupas spent 26 years with the state police before retiring in 2009. He is currently the deputy chief of investigations in Will County. He said his experience in Will and with the state police, where he reached the rank of captain, gives him the administrative expertise necessary to run the sheriff's office.

Kelley has been with the sheriff's office for roughly 26 years, most recently as a sergeant in investigations.

In the race for Will County treasurer, Republican incumbent Steve Weber had 59 percent of the vote to beat Democratic challenger Laurie Summers. With all precincts reporting, unofficial totals show Weber captured 108,163 votes to Summers's 76,250.

Weber, of Mokena, has held the post since being elected in 2010.
