DailyHerald.com named best website by Inland Press

Staff photographer also honored for excellence work

The Daily Herald won a first-place award Tuesday for Digital Journalism General Excellence from the Inland Press Association, as well as other awards for community leadership and staff photography.

The contest was judged by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, and recognized the Daily Herald's website, DailyHerald.com, as the best among newspapers in the over-50,000 circulation category.

The IPA also awarded the Daily Herald its Community Leadership Award, which recognizes a newspaper's use of resources for news coverage, editorial support, and staff involvement to make its communities better places to live and work. It marks the seventh time in the past 11 years that the Daily Herald has received this honor.

This contest was judged by members of the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, who praised the Daily Herald's work to recognize a diverse group of high school students who have demonstrated leadership in academics and sports. The Daily Herald's annual Leadership and Academic teams, regular features including The Suburbs' Top Teachers and Elena Ferrarin's Suburban Standouts, as well as organization of the annual Prep Excellence Sports banquet, are all part of the newspaper's initiative. The newspaper received the award in the circulation over 100,000 category.

Judges called it “a great example of recognizing what communities care most about — their children.”

Daily Herald photographer Brian Hill won two awards — a second place for the feature photo “Hidden Frog,” of a frog peeking out through the water in St. Charles, and a first-place award for the sports photo “Tough Loss.”

“We're thrilled with these honors. They reinforce our commitment to do the best journalism we can for the communities we serve. I'm proud to work with such a fine and dedicated staff,” said Senior Vice President and Editor John Lampinen.
