Fire contained to basement of Kildeer home

A basement fire caused about $75,000 in damage to a Kildeer home this weekend, Long Grove fire officials said Tuesday.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the first arriving firefighters found smoke pouring out of the front door of the home in the 20000 block of Middleton Drive.

The four people living in the home met crews outside and alerted them to a blaze in the basement.

Firefighters used about 750 gallons of water to put out the fire, contained to a utility room in the basement, according to a Long Grove Fire Protection District news release. Crews also were able to stop the blaze from spreading up a pipe chase into the first floor.

But smoke damaged all levels of the home.

The residents are currently staying with relatives, but are expected to move back into the home, said Michael Schmitt, the district's fire marshal and lead investigator.

The district continues to investigate what caused the fire.
