Endorsement: Conroy for a second term in House Dist. 46

Two years ago, we had some concerns about Democrat Deborah Conroy's independence from the state Democratic Party when she ran for her first term in the Illinois House.

But her record in the last two years shows a moderate Democrat whose concern for her district surpasses any loyalty she has to the party or House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Conroy has proved capable of working across the aisle - she was the primary sponsor of Republican DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin's push to reduce the size of DuPage County government. She is opposed to extending the income tax increase as Gov. Pat Quinn is suggesting, and she voted for the pension reform bill. She also is opposed to the Senate bill sponsored by a downstate Democrat that would dramatically cut state funding of suburban schools.

Given that she mirrors many of our stances on issues related to government spending and the fact that she is in line with our social issues views - she voted in favor of same-sex marriage, for example - Conroy, of Villa Park, earns our endorsement for a second term in the 46th Illinois House District. Her Republican opponent is political newcomer Heidi Holan of Glen Ellyn, a home-schooling mother who says Springfield needs more "values-based" leaders. District 46 covers parts of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lombard, Oakbrook Terrace and Villa Park.
