Smoke at Algonquin daycare facility causes evacuation

A malfunctioning furnace forced the evacuation of the Randall Road KinderCare in Algonquin early Wednesday afternoon.

It was a malfunction in an isolated furnace that caused a burning smell and some smoke to spew into one of the classrooms at the day care facility, said Battalion Chief John Greene of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.

"It was just a furnace that the motor seized up," he said. "If there was a fire, it was very small. It was contained within the furnace."

The building was evacuated and children were sent home with their parents, Greene said.

"They can open up for business today," Green said, adding that firefighters gave the all clear at 1:16 p.m.
