Perhaps you missed our anniversary last week as we celebrated seven years in the Twitter world. Amazing how time flies 140 characters at a time.

Grinch arrives early:

It's still September, but officials are already investigating a holiday season theft. Someone stole about $5,000 worth of toys, clothing and other items from a Catholic Charities' Waukegan warehouse. The charity, which annually provides gifts to about 15,000 people in need at the holidays, is now scrambling to recover or replace the gifts.

Here come the Hawks:

Goals in the first preseason game against the Red Wings from both Kane and Toews? Yeah, we're ready for the season to start.

Join the celebration:

Emotions ran high when Arlington High School closed 30 years ago. Reminiscences will be happier this morning when Northwest Suburban High School District 214 kicks off its centennial celebration at the former Arlington Heights campus, which is now Christian Liberty Academy.

Good to settle this lawsuit:

Sears and the villages of Barrington Hills and South Barrington at last settled a lawsuit filed in 2001. The issue was the two suburbs' ordinances stemming from noise in the Poplar Creek Music Theater era. Sears claimed they interfered with development of its land. Now most of the ordinances are gone. With Poplar Creek long gone, logic has prevailed.

Caputo's in Carol Stream

A new Caputo's Fresh Markets opened this week in Carol Stream, drawing big crowds and rave reviews. The store at North Avenue and Schmale Road is 100,000 square feet and attached to the warehouse of the company, which has stores in Addison, Bloomingdale, Hanover Park, Elmwood Park, Naperville, South Elgin and Downers Grove.

Specialities galore:

Reflecting the soup-to-nuts trend in the grocery business, the new Caputo's offers a host of special amenities: fresh juice and yogurt bars, a "Bar Angelo" with craft beers and imported wines, a crepe station and an array of prepared food coming from a wood-over pizza station and sushi, taco and burrito bars.

Filling the void

The demise of the Dominick's chain was a sad occasion, but it's heartening to see many top-notch grocery chains, such as Caputo's, Mariano's, Piggly Wiggly and others, move in to fill the void.

Cougars and snakes:

With the Cubs leaving town for South Bend, the Kane County Cougars landed a new partner for their Class A baseball operation, the Arizona Diamondbacks. And just in time for their 25th season next year, the Cougars are giving a fresh look to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to benefit fans and the team, proving change can be a good thing.

A class act:

Mike Imrem, Barry Rozner and Scot Gregor have all paid well-deserved tributes to White Sox veteran Paul Konerko, who is retiring after his last game on Sunday. We echo their sentiments about his character and his commitment. As Imrem noted, all Chicago fans want is to cheer for someone who gives it his all. Konerko did that and more.
