Cross touts backing of Aurora mayor, Giannoulias

Republican candidate for Illinois Treasurer Tom Cross is touting the backing of two Democrats, including Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, in his race against Democrat Mike Frerichs.

Cross, of Oswego, also pointed to recent friendly comments from former Illinois treasurer and U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias.

"Tom Cross' plans to fight for a balanced budget and crack down on fraud and corruption is bridging the partisan divide and creating great momentum for the campaign," Cross campaign manager Kevin Artl said in a statement.

Frerichs, of Champaign, tried to tie Cross to Treasurer Dan Rutherford, who came in fourth in March's primary for governor and was the subject of harassment complaints by an employee.

"Tom Cross has repeatedly said he thinks Dan Rutherford is doing a good job," Rutherford campaign manager Zach Koutsky said. "Mike Frerichs is going to run the treasurer's office differently."
