Granite City restaurant to open soon in Naperville

The opening of a new restaurant and microbrewery at a popular dining destination in Naperville is less than a month away.

Granite City Food & Brewery will open its second suburban location Oct. 15 at 1828 Abriter Court near the Freedom Commons development at the "To Naperville Road" interchange with I-88.

CEO and St. Charles resident Rob Doran said the restaurant brings a "polished casual" approach to modern American cuisine and has a menu with items such as glazed salmon, bone-in rib-eye and bison short ribs as well as burgers, flatbreads, gluten-free items and vegetarian options.

Doran, a former McDonald's Corporation executive who leads the Minneapolis-based Granite City chain, said he eyed this Naperville location for a while before connecting with developer Superhost Enterprise and finding a sport to build a new restaurant.

"I longed for the site for a long time," Doran said. "I thought it would be a great opportunity for Granite City."

Granite City's first suburban location is in Orland Park and it plans to open another restaurant in Schaumburg late next year.

Granite City also crafts its own beer, starting the process at a brewery in Iowa and finishing it at each restaurant. The Naperville restaurant will sell beers from local brewers including Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville, Two Brothers Brewing Company in Warrenville and Penrose Brewing Company in Geneva and it will employ about 250 people.
