Chicago boy, 3, shot in head, critically wounded

A 3-year-old Chicago boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head at a home on the city's West Side.

Police spokeswoman Ana Pacheco says detectives believe the boy may have discovered the gun at the residence and that he or a playmate may have accidentally fired it.

The shooting occurred Friday night in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Pacheco says police have not recovered the weapon and are searching for its owner.

Relatives speaking to reporters at the hospital have identified the boy as James Jenkins.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the boy's aunt, Annette Garvin, told reporters that the family "is just in shock right now."
