Weather service confirms Wisconsin tornado
APPLETON, Wis. - The National Weather Service says a tornado this week was the first to hit ground in north central and northeastern Wisconsin.
Post-Crescent Media reports the service confirmed on Thursday that Monday's storms generated the tornado. Green Bay meteorologist Jeff Last says it was relatively weak and touched down about 3 miles northeast of Winchester. It felled trees and caused other light damage.
Another weak tornado briefly touched down in Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh on July 27. There are typically six or seven tornadoes in the area during the summer.
The National Weather Service Green Bay office has issued about half the average number of warnings this season.
Last says cooler temperatures have reduced thunderstorms' strength, but the area has seen above-average rainfall.
