Police: Drunk Aurora man drove onto Batavia playground

An Aurora man faces multiple alcohol-related charges after driving his vehicle onto a Batavia playground shortly after school dismissal Monday, police said.

Batavia police were first called to H.C. Storm School, 304 N. Van Nortwick Ave., at 3:30 p.m. for a suspicious person, police said in a news release. Officers discovered Stephen A. Wake, 65, of the 2900 block of Arbor Lane, drinking a bottle of wine near the soccer field, the release said.

Wake told police a friend dropped him off so he could watch practice. Officers wrote him a ticket for having open liquor in a public place, according to the release.

About a half-hour later, Wake drove his blue 2012 Chevrolet Equinox onto the playground on the south side of the school, police said. He failed a field sobriety test and was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Wake posted bail and was released. He's expected in a Kane County court Wednesday, Sept. 17.
