Barrington Post 158's streak ends in regional

Barrington American Legion Post 158's impressive winning streak came to an end Thursday morning.

Facing Napoleon (Ohio), Barrington fell 3-0 in first-round play of the Great Lakes regional at Sycamore Stadium in Terre Haute, Ind.

Barrington (41-8), which was crowned Illinois' champion last weekend after going unbeaten against the state's best teams at Recreation Park in Arlington Heights, had won 15 in a row and 33 of its last 34 games. It earned a state-best ninth state title and its first since 1993.

But Post 158 had trouble against Napoleon's Zach Willeman, who allowed only 3 hits and struck out eight in a complete-game victory.

Scott Nelson, Jared Ludwig and Jack Lenz had the hits for Barrington.

Willeman walked only four and saw his team play error-free ball behind him until the ninth inning. Barrington did not commit an error.

Nelson started for Post 158 and allowed 3 earned runs in 6 innings, as Napoleon scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Jack Covek tossed 2 scoreless relief innings for Barrington.

Napoleon (45-17) advances to a 5 p.m. Friday game against the winner of Thursday's matchup between the Indiana and Michigan state champs.

Barrington is next slated for a 10 a.m. Friday matchup, an elimination game against the losing team in the Indiana/Michigan contest.
