New U of I union will have to wait on raises
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Some members of a new union for faculty members who aren't on tenure tracks at the University of Illinois will have to wait to get raises that had already been offered.
The university this week told the new Campus Faculty Association that salary increases planned for the upcoming academic year can't be given to some "specialized faculty" because the union doesn't have a labor deal.
The new union was certified by the state on July 8.
It isn't clear how many of the union's 473 members will be affected.
According to The News-Gazette, the provost's office also says it is appealing the state's decision to certify the union.
Faculty members who formed the union said they were seeking better pay and multi-year contracts.
