Lt. Gov. Simon tours Aurora farmers market

AURORA - Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is scheduled to tour the farmers market in Aurora on Saturday as part of an effort to urge more markets around the state to accept Link cards.

Simon is a Carbondale Democrat who is making a bid for Illinois comptroller against Republican Judy Baar Topinka of Riverside.

She says making Link cards available at all markets "means healthier eating options for those in need."

The lieutenant governor's office estimates that about a quarter of Illinois' 400 farmers markets have the technology to run the cards. Link cards access federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Simon's office also says she plans to play her banjo and participate in a canning demonstration at the event.
