Arrests made in Cook County jail smuggling ring
A correctional officer was among those arrested over the weekend for smuggling contraband into Cook County jail, authorities said.
Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart made the announcement Monday.
Dart's office says Jermaine Hoskins was arrested after police found marijuana and tobacco in his car, alongside toothpaste tubes. Investigators say he had been bringing contraband items into the jail for more than a year. He was charged with bringing contraband into a penal institution and official misconduct, both felonies. Dart's office says investigators learned that toothpaste caps were used to measure marijuana that was distributed detainees. Also arrested were a jail detainee, Lawrence Post, and his acquaintance, Taveda Driver. Both were charged with bribing an officer, also a felony.
All three appeared in bond court Monday at Chicago's Leighton Criminal Court building.
