Salt Creek's 25th triathlon is Sunday at Twin Lakes

Registration is closed, but there's plenty to see Sunday, June 29, at the Salt Creek Rural Park District's 25th anniversary Twin Lakes Triathlon in Palatine. But you have to get up early.

Five hundred triathletes will compete in the swim/bike/run event starting at 6:30 a.m.

This triathlon started in 1989 with 300 participants and has grown in popularity over the years.

One of the athletes and sponsors is Joe Barrutia, who is the owner of Slice of Chicago and Agio's, and has been competing in this event since its beginning. The youngest participant this year is 15 years old and the oldest is 78.

The park district staff is grateful to all the volunteers and sponsors who have supported this event for 25 years.

To avoid long lines on Sunday, athletes are advised to pick up their packets ahead of time at Runners High 'n' Tri, 121 W. Campbell St. in Arlington Heights. Packets are available there through Saturday, June 28.

For more details, call (847) 259-6890 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.
