Some Milwaukee owned lots could sell for $1

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's common council has approved a plan to sell some city-owned lots that are vacant for $1.

The city has 2,700 vacant residential lots and the legislation approved Tuesday involves about 15 percent of those on the north side. The $1 cost would be offered to adjacent property owners if the buyer lives in the city.

The legislation involving the pilot program still has to be signed off on by Mayor Tom Barrett. An email sent to his spokeswoman wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.

Alderman Russell Stamper sponsored the legislation. In a statement, he says he hopes the program will unburden the city to maintain the vacant lots resulting from all the foreclosures.

He says if the program's successful, it may be expanded to other parts of the city.
