Computer outage at Illinois Secretary of State Thursday

Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Secretary of State office's main computer briefly stopped working, halting transactions for about three hours.

Department spokesman Henry Haupt tells the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises that a failed power generator caused the problem on Thursday. The outage affected transactions like car license renewals and corporate filings.

Haupt says technicians worked to get the large agency back online.

The mainframe computer connects the agency's offices in Springfield with dozens of driver's license facilities across Illinois. The local offices stayed open but employees couldn't perform any work involving the computer.
