Illinois nuclear power plant releases emergency plan

BYRON, Ill. - The company that runs a nuclear power plant in northern Illinois is releasing its emergency plans to people who live in the area.

Exelon Corporation announced that it's mailing more than 21,000 brochures to residents and businesses within 10 miles of nuclear energy facilities in Byron. Federal law requires nuclear energy companies to develop emergency plans.

The brochures include information about reception centers, evacuation routes and a list of emergency alert broadcast systems. It also includes a card to be completed and returned for those who may require special transportation accommodations or other needs.

Exelon officials say they have multiple backup safety systems to ensure a safe operation.

The Byron plant is about 110 miles west of Chicago.
