Students, seniors meet up in Geneva for 'Readers are Leaders'

Third-graders from the Mill Creek Elementary School in Geneva walked from their school to GreenFields to meet Miss Lori, a favorite children's entertainer from WTTW. At GreenFields, the stage was set for the kids as they joined residents for "Readers are Leaders." The spirited program encourages the two generations to bond, learn from each other, and enjoy the music and merriment provided by Miss Lori and her crew.

GreenFields of Geneva is a senior living community adjacent to Mill Creek Elementary School. "The residents of GreenFields are active and engaged throughout the area and teaming up with our neighbors is one of our favorite pastimes," said Judi Donovan, executive director of GreenFields. "We love to promote intergenerational interactions. Both generations clearly enjoy and benefit from the relationships. This program was just one more way of us connecting with the community in a meaningful way."

Up on their feet dancing with their senior partners and each other, the children participated in the 415th episode of the beloved "Readers are Leaders" road show. The nontelevised program is a community outreach funded by the Russell and Josephine Kott Memorial Charitable Trust and sponsored by Aldi's. It is in its seventh year of charming, inspiring and challenging children to be readers; and older generations, especially grandparents, to lead by their example.

GreenFields resident Burton Nevin, who rocked to the lively music with the kids and other adults, said he was drawn to the event because "we have a responsibility to nurture the children. You have to reach out if anyone is going to know you care."

Carolyn and Paul Reed also enjoyed the party-like atmosphere created by Miss Lori and her friends. The Reeds came to the event because they love kids and have four grandchildren of their own ranging in age from 2 to 23.

The third-graders chose their senior buddy for the games and singing. Kaylee Tredup chose Mary Rozinski and sat in her lap for the duration of the games. The bond was so natural; you would not know they were strangers before the music started.

GreenFields is an exceptional LifeCare community offering an ideal location, a wonderful retirement lifestyle. GreenFields offers independent living, assisted living, memory support, rehabilitation and skilled nursing, with the most comprehensive plan available for long-term care if ever needed.
