Prep coach wins title, leaves school in mystery

CHAMPAIGN - Just more than two months ago, St. Thomas More High School in Champaign was celebrating a state girls' basketball championship. Now it's looking for a new head coach and neither the school nor the man who had the job will say why he's gone.

The private school won the Class 2A championship in early March with a win over Prophetstown. It was the second-straight season that coach Chris Mennig had led the team to the championship game.

But Mennig left the school April 16. Neither he nor the school will say why.

On Thursday, Mennig told The News-Gazette in Champaign that he looks forward to talking about his departure. But he said his attorneys have told him not to.

The school has declined to discuss Mennig's exit.
