Chicago man sentenced to 50 years in slaying

JOLIET - A Will County judge has sentenced a Chicago man to 50 years in prison in the 2011 death of a man who was beaten with a lamp and then robbed.

The Will County State's Attorney's office says 25-year-old Rodney Julun was sentenced Friday in the death of 59-year-old Dwight Jones. Jurors convicted Julun of first-degree murder in January.

Prosecutors contended Julun killed Jones at his New Lenox Township house shortly after the two had met. They say Julun beat Jones and then stole his cellphone, cash and other valuables and returned the next day with two friends to steal more of Jones' belongings.

Judge Daniel Rozak called it "a senseless, cold-blooded and brutal act."
