Red Stars open with win

The Chicago Red Stars got their 2014 season off to a good start, defeating the Western New York Flash 1-0 in Saturday's National Women's Soccer League season opener.

Julie Johnston converted the game's only goal in the 59th minute off a corner kick from Naperville native Vanessa DiBernardo, playing her first professional match.

The Red Stars played at Toyota Park as part of a soccer doubleheader with the Chicago Fire. The rest of the team's home games will be played at Benedictine University in Lisle.
