Tough loss for Grayslake North

Girls soccer

Crystal Lake South 2, Grayslake North 1: Sophomore Meghan McCue scored the Knights' only goal, assisted by freshman Morgan Lyon, in the second half of the Fox Valley Conference game.

The host Gators scored the game-winning goal with about 23 minutes left. It was a 0-0 match at the half.

"The first half both teams created a couple of chances, but Crystal Lake South began to have the majority of possession and we started to back off defensively, giving them too much space to operate," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "While we were still scoreless at halftime, we knew we had to step up the pressure we were attempting to put CLS under in order to start having an offensive impact on the game."

After Grayslake North (4-4) fell behind, McCue evened the score when she received a pass from Lyon, turned, took on her defender and beat the keeper with a left-footed shot.

DeCaluwe noted the strong play of McCue (3 shots on target), freshman Sydney Paez (2 shots on target), Chelsea Olson and Kendall Detweiler.

Wheeling 2, Round Lake 1: Izzy Rodriguez scored for the Panthers, who were tied 1-1 with the Wildcats at halftime of the nonconference match.

Round Lake keeper Jordan Devera made 6 saves.
