Chicago bike-share program breaks one-day record

Chicago officials say the city's bicycle-sharing program has set a single-day record.

The city's blue Divvy bikes were taken for almost 10,900 rides and pedaled more than 32,000 miles on Saturday, when temperatures climbed into the 70s.

That bested the previous one-day record by 200 rides.

The city launched the Divvy program last summer with a goal of getting more people to bike and to improve quality of life in the downtown area. It allows people to rent bicycles from hundreds of docking stations.

Seven hundred bikes in winter storage were released last week.

In its first nine months, the Divvy bikes have logged more than 950,000 trips and an estimated 2 million miles.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared April 21-27 as "Divvy Week," when daily passes will be $5.
