No injuries but break area destroyed in fire at Six Flags Great America Wednesday

No one was injured but an employee area was destroyed in a fire at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee.

The fire broke out in an employee break area near the Grand Music Hall about 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, Gurnee Fire Batallion Chief Jim Pellitteri said.

The building was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, Pellitteri said. However, damage was limited to the employee break area, and firefighters worked swiftly to keep it from spreading to the park's Grand Music Hall, he added.

"It was a success in that regard," he said. "We managed to contain it to just that one area."

The building that housed the employee break area suffered about $32,000 in damage, while contents inside were valued at an additional $25,000, Pellitteri said. No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and only security personnel were at the park overnight.

Six Flags spokeswoman Katy Enrique acknowledged the fire in a statement Thursday, saying the fire was in a backstage area of the park.

"The Gurnee Fire Department was able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire," Enrique said. "The area sustained minimal damage and there were no injuries."

Pellitteri said the blaze remains under investigation.
