A fire did significant damage to Midwest Motors Monday afternoon in Lake Zurich, but most of the business's high-end cars were not damaged, firefighters said.
Lake Zurich firefighters were called to Midwest Motors, on the 500 block of Courtland Drive and Route 22, just west of Rand Road, at about 5 p.m. and arrived to smoke and fire coming from the second story.
Midwest Motors specializes in late-model, low-mileage, luxury and exotic vehicles, according to its website.
A second floor office and attic sustained smoke and fire damage, while the first floor -- where the cars were kept -- only sustained water damage, Lake Zurich Deputy Chief Donald Golubski said.
"They have a pretty large inventory of specialty cars, and we were able to salvage the cars and have them moved out," Golubski said.
Minesh Patel, of Lake Zurich, was heading west on Route 22 on his way home from work when he saw a big plume of smoke as he approached the business.
"When I got here there was flames coming out the top and out of the side and a lot of smoke coming out of the roof," he said. "That's basically when the engines pulled up."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates were available Monday night.
Other fire departments that assisted included: Arlington Heights, Barrington, Barrington Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Fox River Grove, Libertyville, Lincolnshire, Long Grove, Palatine, and Wauconda Fire, while Wheeling and Mount Prospect Fire Departments provided station coverage and handled other calls.
