Northwestern launches $3.75B fundraising campaign

Northwestern University is kicking off an ambitious $3.75 billion fundraising effort.

The private university in Evanston says the money will be used for a series of new buildings and renovations while also endowing professorships, creating scholarships and supporting research, among other plans.

Officials plan to build a new lakefront recreation complex, visitors center and music and communications building on the Evanston campus.

In a statement Friday, Northwestern President Morton Schapiro says the school has already raised $1.52 billion for the effort called "We Will. The Campaign for Northwestern."

The school also hopes to increase the number of donors who contribute money to the university. So far, nearly 86,000 people have contributed to the effort.
