Citywide nursing school planned in Chicago

Chicago's city college system plans to consolidate its nursing programs at Malcolm X College on the city's West Side.

The citywide nursing school will be part of the $251 million Malcolm X College and School of Health Sciences that's under construction.

City Colleges of Chicago will merge nursing programs now operating at Daley, Malcolm X, Truman and Wright colleges into one program during the next two years. The combined program requires state approval. Officials hope to open it in 2016.

City Colleges Chancellor Cheryl Hyman announced the change last month. She says a single, citywide nursing program will ensure that every student "has access to the best possible program."

Other City Colleges health care-related programs also will move to the new facility.
