Decision made to be politically correct

Did you know that the Washington Redskins football team no longer exists?

Wait, you might say, I just saw them play the other night. Let me explain.

As an old journalist, I hate to see journalists make decisions to be politically correct. What has happened with the Daily Herald is that it has obviously made a decision (like some broadcasters, but not the Chicago Tribune) to never mention the word "Redskins" again as a protest over the name. Just check the box scores and the stories in this newspaper. Try to find this offensive word. Can you imagine how hard it would be not to say the "R" word if you were broadcasting the game? The poor announcer will exert so much energy to not say "Redskins" he might have trouble doing the game!

Last I looked, it was still the Redskins.

The Herald must have had a copy editors meeting and told everyone that under no circumstances should this term Redskins (can you even print it in a letter to the editor?) be used.

Of course, everyone is entitled to his opinion, and that's for your sports columnists to debate. But how can you justify a protest statement like this? Is this proper journalism?

Until the Washington Redskins make that change (if they do), they are still the Washington Redskins.
