Madigan: Beware television tip-over accidents

SPRINGFIELD — Secure heavy televisions to prevent tip-overs that could injure a small child is the message from Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Saturday, which is National TV Safety Day.

According to Madigan's office, studies show a child visits an emergency room every 45 minutes because of a tip-over accident and a child dies from such an accident every three weeks.

Madigan urges parents to follow guidelines established by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

It recommends that televisions and furniture be anchored to the floor or wall; that TVs be placed on sturdy, low-base stands; that toys and other items of interest be kept off TV stands; and that TV and cable cords be kept out of reach.
