Chicago ramps up winter war with potholes
CHICAGO — The city of Chicago is ramping up its winter war with potholes earlier than usual.
That's after the arctic winds that pushed temperatures far below zero this week.
It also follows a report from Chicago's inspector general that found the city failed to meet its own deadlines for pothole repairs for the past three years. The inspector general also found that Chicago was reporting inaccurate data to the public that made its pothole performance look better than it was.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Friday pothole-filling crews would now be at work seven days a week with the addition of a weekend team.
His office said that in the first few days of 2014, crews have filled more than 15,000 potholes.
The number for all of last year was 625,000.
