Mundelein jewlery store customers await snow total

More than 200 customers are waiting to learn if enough snow fell for them to wind up with full refunds for their purchases as part of a Mundelein jewelry store’s promotion.

P.K. Bennett Jewelers will return $151,000 if at least 3 inches of snow fell from midnight to noon Wednesday at O’Hare International Airport. The customers who bypassed discounts and went for it all by joining the snow promotion made their purchases between Nov. 29 and Dec. 24.

Rich Bennett, who co-owns the Butterfield Road business with his wife, Peggy, said an insurance company that would cover the refunds for the 224 customers hired Murray and Trettel Inc.’s Weather Command in Palatine to verify if the 3-inch mark was reached at O’Hare over the specified 12 hours.

As of 9 p.m., 4.9 inches had been reported at O’Hare according to the National Weather Service, but it was unclear if that total occurred between midnight and noon.

Bennett said the snow total for contest purposes won’t be known until Thursday afternoon, at the earliest. He said promotion participants were told it could take three to seven days for the snow total to be considered official for the insurance policy purposes.

“It doesn’t keep them (customers) from getting excited and asking,” Bennett said Wednesday.

Bennett told the Daily Herald that qualifying purchases range from less than $13 to more than $5,000.
