Elgin police investigate shots fired outside house party

Detectives from the Elgin Police Department’s Gang Crimes Unit are investigating reports of gunshots fired early Sunday morning on the 1000 block of Congdon Avenue.

Officers responding to several reports of gunfire about 12:19 a.m. were told that people were seen running into a residence following the sounds of shots, according to police. Officers were able to locate several spent shell casings in the driveway of the residence, police said. No injured people were located.

Over the course of two hours, about 50 people exited the residence, where officers learned a party had been taking place, police said. Officers were able to secure the residence with the assistance of the homeowner.

Several juveniles who exited the home were transported to the Elgin Police Department and released to their parents.

While officers were investigating the reports, two adults, identified as 19-year-old Daniel Hernandez of Elgin and 18-year-old Odessian Torres of South Elgin, were both arrested on charges of obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.

Hernandez posted bond at the Elgin Police Department and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 10. Torres is also scheduled to appear in court Feb. 10 but is being held on an unrelated warrant out of Cook County.
