Artist helps make cards for children’s hospital

Kids had the chance to create artwork for themselves and spread a little holiday cheer Friday at the Vernon Area Library District in Lincolnshire.

Children in kindergarten through second grade worked with artist Christine Thornton of Mount Prospect to create New Year’s greeting cards.

After a reading of the popular book “Snowmen at Night” by author Caralyn Buehner, students created mixed media snowman cards using oil pastels and collage. They also wrote an inspirational note in each card.

The kids kept one of the cards for themselves and will send the other to Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

“It’s a nice chance for them to give back to kids who are having a tough time right now and are in the hospital,” Thornton said.

Laurel Shapiro, youth services coordinator at Vernon Area Library District added, “We wanted children helping and thinking of other children during the holiday.”
