Cardinal George celebrating Christmas Mass at jail

Francis Cardinal George plans to celebrate Christmas with a Mass at the Cook County Jail and by visiting hospitalized children.

The 76-year-old Archbishop of Chicago will celebrate Mass in the morning with mail detainees in a minimum security division at the Cook County Jail.

Then he’ll visit with hospitalized children at the Ann And Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

George is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

He is the first native of the city to serve as archbishop of Chicago, and was named to the post in 1997 by Pope John Paul II.

The archdiocese of Chicago serves 2.2 million Catholics in 356 parishes.
