Arlington Hts. streets shut down briefly for car fire

A section of downtown Arlington Heights was briefly shut down Friday evening when a car in a parking garage caught fire, authorities said.

The Arlington Heights Fire Department received multiple calls about 6:30 p.m. about a car on fire between the third and fourth floor of a parking garage across from the Dunton Tower Apartments at 55 S. Vail Ave., department officials said.

When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke emerging from the vehicle. The fire, firefighters said, had started beneath the engine before becoming fully involved.

Firefighters immediately hooked up to one of the fire hydrants nearby and quenched the fire.

There were no injuries, and the only other damage was to vehicles parked on either side.

The occupants, who were on the scene, said the car had just been worked on.

Traffic was shut down on Vail between Campbell and Sigwalt streets while firefighters put out the blaze.

No damage estimate was available, and the fire is still under investigation.
