Workers, weather have Elgin's City Skate prepared

Ice skaters might be the only ones enjoying this bitterly cold weather.

Unlike some years in recent memory when rinks like City Skate in downtown Elgin have tried in vain to keep the ice solid, Mother Nature is taking care of that big time this week.

City employees were out clearing Wednesday's snow from the ice surface, and they planned to add more water to the rink if skies stayed clear the rest of the day.

Bob Theal, part of the crew out shoveling and blowing snow Wednesday, said that even the slightest bit of falling snow can keep the water from freezing at the proper consistency for a skating rink.

City Skate is open every day through March 2, and you can check out the specific hours on the city's website.
